2024 Review - and a look at the future

2024 was a year of great changes for Makerkit. Here's a look at what we've accomplished and what's next.

2024 was a year of changes not only for Makerkit, but for the whole SaaS Boilerplates ecosystem.

As SaaS Boilerplates became the favorite side-project of many developers (some, with debatable quality), we've had to adapt to the new reality. Simply put, Makerkit needed to get better.

Starting back in March 2024, I worked hard on the Turbo version of Makerkit, a fully rewritten version of the Next.js and Remix SaaS Boilerplates. It took about one month to complete. Needless to say, I didn't sleep a lot during that time.

The goals I had set for the Turbo version were:

  • professionally designed
  • high code-quality
  • extendable and maintainable
  • best-in-class documentation

I am not sure whether this has been fully achieved, but I'm proud of all the work I put into it, and I am confident the product will keep improving.

Makerkit's Future in 2025

In 2025, there a re a few things that we will focus on:

  1. More Open Source: the introduction of the Open Source Lite kit is a great step forward. It showcases Makerkit's structure and code quality, but can also be used as a foundation for your own SaaS. We will open source more non-core kits in the future.
  2. More blog posts and documentation: we will continue to improve the documentation and blog posts. We will also add more tutorials to help developers learn Makerkit's features.
  3. Updating Remix to React Router v7: we will port the Remix kit to React Router v7. This will allow us to use the new features of React Router v7 and make the Remix kit more future-proof. The work has started, but the support from hosting providers is still pending, therefore we will not be able to release it until the support is available (for example, Vercel).
  4. Tailwind CSS v4 support: we will update the kit to use Tailwind CSS v4. This will allow us to take advantage of the new features and increased performance for page reloads. The PR is ready, but the final release is still pending.
  5. React Native companion kit: we will open source a React Native companion kit. This will allow developers to build mobile apps using React Native and integrate them with their SaaS. The kit will be released in Q1 2025 or later.
  6. Paddle Integration: we will integrated Paddle as a plugin for the kit. This allows you to use Paddle (instead of Stripe or Lemon Squeezy) to collect payments from your customers.
  7. Job Board for makerkit.dev: we will create a job board for makerkit.dev. This will allow developers to find and hire developers for their SaaS projects.
  8. Explore new SaaS Starter Kits: we will explore building SaaS Starter Kits with new technologies.
  9. Continuous Improvements: as you can expect from Makerkit, we will continue to improve the product based on user feedback and market trends.
  10. Video Content: if you can stand my Italian accent, I may venture into creating video content. There's a lot to learn for me here, but I've been asked more times I can count, so I'll give it a try.

The list above is not exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of what we will be working on in 2025. We will keep you updated on our progress.

Conclusion

I am excited! The future of Makerkit looks bright, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we will build together.

For the time being, thanks for being a part of the Makerkit community. We're here to help you build your next SaaS, and we're excited to see what you'll create.

Happy 2025!
